Against the cold: drink your Shochu Oyuwari
Dec 15, 2021
Shochu can be enjoyed in a variety of ways. A common drinking method in Japan is "Oyuwari" (oyu = hot water, wari = split), i.e. shochu extended with hot water. This drinking method is popular with us during the cold season and is often used as an alternative to grog or tea with a shot. To enjoy a shochu oyuwari, the hot water is poured over the shochu in a ratio of 4:6 or 6:4. The water should have a temperature of around 70°C. As the taste of each shochu reacts slightly differently to the hot water, you can experiment with the temperature. However, because alcohol boils at 78°C, the shochu should definitely not be poured over with hot water. A ceramic vessel is suitable for drinking.
Shochus in our store that are particularly suitable for Oyuwari are the Kampou Shochu, the Ookubo Shochu, the Kagamizu Ginger Shochu, the Kumaken Shochu and the Chingu Kuro Shochu.
