Discover with us: Unique craft gins from Japan

Japanese gin is exciting and offers a diverse world of flavors. The history of Japanese craft gin is still relatively young. There were already gins produced in Japan in the 1970s by large companies such as Suntory (e.g. Suntory Dry Gin) or Nikka (e.g. Nikka Wilkinson). The craft gin scene, on the other hand, has only really developed in recent years, but is now showing truly exceptional dynamism.

In contrast to some newcomers from other countries, the new gin producers in Japan usually have many years of experience in the production of alcohol, and the companies have often been around for centuries. They have previously produced shochu (Japan's national spirit), whisky or sake, often in the third, fourth or even fifth generation. So there is a great deal of knowledge and craftsmanship, and you can clearly taste it.

When it comes to botanicals, the obligatory juniper is joined by exciting botanicals such as ginger, local herbs such as shiso, rare citrus fruits such as dai dai, yuzu, sudachi or kabosu, green matcha and gyokuro tea, the stem, blossom and leaves of cherry blossom, or even parts of conifers or mountain shrubs.
