"Silent Grain" - The finest combination of shochu & whisky
Nov 01, 2025
Japanese bar culture thrives on balance, depth and restraint. When the round character of a barley shochu and the elegant complexity of a Japanese whisky meet, very different forms of expression unfold. Shochu brings a silky, clear texture and a mild umami note, while whisky adds depth, warmth and structure. Together, they create a fascinating interplay of lightness and strength that merges into a harmonious composition in the glass.
Shochu - silent hero in a cocktail glass
In Japan, shochu is often enjoyed with soda or on the rocks, but it also works extremely well in cocktails: it carries flavors without overpowering them, gives drinks length and a subtle spiciness. Unlike many Western spirits, shochu is more restrained in terms of alcohol, which makes it an ideal partner for modern, finely balanced drinks. It opens up the space for nuances, for depth without heaviness. In combination with the autumnal Dover Maron liqueur and the herbaceous, spicy Waka Hajime liqueur, the result is a cocktail that is perfect for the current season.
For the "Silent Grain" you need:
- 2 cl Mars Maltage Cosmo Whisky
- 3 cl Kofukuro Roasted Barley Shochu
- 2 cl Waka Liqueur Hajime - "Winter Herb & Spicy"
- 1 cl Dover chestnut liqueur
- 2-3 dashes walnut bitters
Preparation:
Place all the ingredients in a mixing glass with ice, stir until cold and then strain into a coupette.
Kanpai!
