The Kenjou Shuzo distillery is located in Tachiarai in Fukuoka Prefecture. Fukuoka is the second largest barley producer in Japan after the neighboring prefecture of Saga. The barley is particularly aromatic due to the extremely fertile soil and the proximity to the active volcanoes on Kyushu.

The raw material for the Kofukuro Shochu, which incidentally translates as "little owl", is exclusively roasted barley. Roasted barley is also used for fermentation in the form of roasted barley koji. Very slow fermentation and atmospheric distillation produce a shochu that has a beautiful barley aroma and is very flavorful. There is no other company in Japan that produces shochu with roasted barley and roasted barley koji. Kenjou has patented this special method (patent no. 6099110) and is a pioneer in this field.

The Kofukuro Shochu has an elegant chocolate aroma that is paired with subtle coffee notes. It has a full body and provides a very pleasant mouthfeel. The Kofukuro is wonderful on its own, but can also be enjoyed on the rocks. Its exciting aromas make it a particularly good food pairing with desserts, as well as dark meat and vegetables. As an ingredient for cocktails, it brings fantastic roasted aromas to the glass and can easily replace a liqueur. And, as is usual with shochu, it contains no artificial additives or residual sugar. This makes shochu the lowest-calorie spirit in the world.
