Trendy tuber - a different take on the sweet potato...
Feb 04, 2022
The sweet potato was already in fashion 10,000 years ago and is one of the most important staple foods in many countries. This is also the case in Japan, where the great tuber has been used to make shochu for centuries.
The sweet potato grows most frequently in Kagoshima Prefecture on Japan's southernmost island of Kyushu. The best known is probably the Satsuma Imo (Imo = sweet potato), which comes from the Satsuma peninsula of the same name.
Pure craftsmanship!
There are 113 distilleries in Kagoshima and almost all of them produce Imo Shochu. This is extremely aromatic and multi-faceted and extremely popular in Japan. More than 50 different types of sweet potato are used for shochu production. The taste of this delicious droplet is just as varied.
More than just chips...
The sweet potato only really came into fashion here a few years ago. They are particularly popular as chips or puree. Why not get this superfood in a jar! It's much quicker than cooking! Incidentally, at 30 kcal per 4 cl, Imo Shochu is also low in calories compared to other spirits.
Feel the taste...
If you want to try something very special, we recommend the Samurai No Mon Shochu. Only 2,500 bottles of this delicious drop are produced each year, and outside Asia you can only get the Samurai from us.
Sweet potato with a difference...
The Daiyame Shochu, on the other hand, is quite crazy. With its extreme aromas of lychee and elderflower, it's hard to believe that this shochu is made from sweet potato. But thanks to a special ageing method, which producer Hamada Shuzo keeps top secret, this is possible. Further proof that sweet potatoes are simply super!
Daiyame is also great for cocktails, for example in combination with watermelon or wild berry...
You can find all the sweet potato shochus in our store here . Just give them a try...
