The Kakuzou Shochu from Omoya Shuzo is a genuine Iki Shochu, as it comes directly from Iki Island, the birthplace of barley shochu (mugi). It is a Genshu Shochu with 41% vol., i.e. an undiluted Shochu with a particularly unique and complex taste. It impresses with intense notes of roasted barley, almost reminiscent of popcorn. Aged for over eight years in steel tanks, this shochu is particularly well-rounded. Only 1,000 bottles of Kakuzou are produced each year.

There are only seven distilleries on Iki Island, and Omoya Shuzo is the smallest of them with just a handful of employees. The barley and rice for the koji rice are grown by the distillery itself on Iki Island. The designation of origin "Iki Island" for Shochu was geographically protected by the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 1995 (comparable to "Cognac" or "Champagne").

The Kakuzou Shochu is the company's most exceptional shochu and honors the origins of Omoya Shuzo, as it is produced under the name of its founder, Kakuzou Yokoyama. This shochu is fermented in clay pots, distilled under normal pressure and stored for a very long time in steel tanks. It is also bottled undiluted. What is interesting about this Iki-Shochu is the distinct popcorn note. The taste is intense and lingers in the mouth for a long time. A slight fruitiness follows in the finish.

Kakuzou can be enjoyed straight or on the rocks, and its high alcohol content makes it ideal for use as a digestif or for cocktails, such as the classic Izakaya "Lemon Sour". When paired with food, this shochu is a great accompaniment to grilled meat and vegetables as well as fruity and chocolaty desserts.

About the manufacturer

The home of Omoya Shuzo is Iki Island, a tiny island with only 28,000 inhabitants, located in the Tsushima Strait between Japan and South Korea. The designation of origin "Iki Island" for Shochu was geographically protected by the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 1995 (comparable to "Cognac" or "Champagne"). Only seven distilleries still have this special status, and Omoya, founded in 1924, is the smallest of them. Only a handful of employees work here, and everything from barley and rice cultivation to harvesting and distilling is done by hand. You can't get more craft than that! Omoya Shuzo's product line is relatively small compared to its larger competitors, but each product is unique. All of Omoya Shuzo's shochus are produced in very small batches, making them true craft spirits.
