Umeshu is probably one of Japan's most traditional alcoholic specialties. Every family has its own secret recipe for it. Ume is often referred to as a plum, but botanically speaking it is a type of apricot. Only Benisashi ume is used for Kaga Umeshu. This particular variety only grows in Kanazawa City (Ishikawa Prefecture) and in neighboring Fukui Prefecture. "Beni" means "red" and "sashi" means "shining". The name therefore stands for the deep red and radiant color of the ripe ume. The ripe fruits of the Benisashi Ume have more amino acids than other types of high-quality ume (Nankounai Ume). Due to the higher proportion of amino acids, benisashi ume has a milder aroma and an intense umami flavor. The Kaga Umeshu is produced using a traditional technique. It is matured for two years and has a clear and rich ume flavor.

Manzairaku Kaga Umeshu has already won several awards and is served on all first-class flights operated by ANA (All Nippon Airways), among others. It has also been served as a digestif at the Nobel Prize reception.

This umeshu is an ideal aperitif and digestif and can be enjoyed neat, on ice or with soda. The Kaga Umeshu also works very well in cocktails.

About the manufacturer

Manzairaku Sake Kura is one of the most renowned and oldest sake breweries in Ishikawa Prefecture on the island of Honshū. The company, which has been in existence since 1716, is not only known for great sake, but also for fantastic umeshu. The prefecture has clear water of outstanding quality, which gives the spirits produced there an intense and incomparable taste. Manzairaku means "always be happy". The brewery is located at the foot of Mount Hakusan in the town of the same name. Since 1990, the company has been producing not only sake but also umeshu, which has already won several awards. First class guests of the airline ANA (All Nippon Airways) regularly enjoy this special delicacy. Incidentally, great sake from Manzairaku is also available in our store.
