The Fukuro Shochu is an intensely flavored and complex shochu made from roasted barley (mugi). Bottled at 40% vol, this is a Genshu Shochu. The Fukuro is aged for 5 to 7 years in oak barrels and is sure to impress not only lovers of barrel-aged spirits. The roasting of the barley creates intense roasted aromas that harmonize wonderfully with the barrel notes.
Description
Fukuro Shochu is produced by Kenjou Shuzo in Tachiarai in Fukuoka Prefecture. Fukuoka is the second largest barley producer in Japan after the neighboring prefecture of Saga. The barley is particularly aromatic due to the extremely fertile soil and the proximity to the active volcanoes on Kyushu.
The raw material for Fukuro Shochu is exclusively roasted barley. Roasted barley in the form of roasted barley koji and rice koji are used for fermentation. This shochu is produced by vacuum distillation. The long-term storage of 5 to 7 years in oak barrels ensures an exciting complexity. Despite the relatively high alcohol content of 40% - at least for a shochu - the Fukuro is very easy to drink. The finish is long with elegant umami notes.
The Fukuro Shochu is a real medal catcher. It has regularly received the gold award at the Monde Selection International Gold Award since 2012. At the Tokyo Whisky & Spirits Competition 2021, it secured the highest gold award "Superior Gold". It won gold here in 2020. It was awarded the gold medal at the Fukuoka Spirits Competition in 2023.
Fukuru means "owl", which also appears on the label of the bottle. Owls are one of the top 10 lucky charms in Japan. However, owls not only bring good luck and counteract difficulties, they are also a symbol of wisdom, science and art.
Fukuro can be enjoyed neat as a digestif, but it also tastes great on the rocks. Thanks to its exciting aromas, it goes particularly well with desserts in food pairing, but also with dark meat and vegetables. As an ingredient for cocktails, it brings fantastic roasted aromas and barrel notes to the glass and makes for particularly exciting creations.
