The Fukuro Shochu from Kenjou Shuzo is a shochu made from roasted barley (mugi) at 40% vol. This is a Genshu Shochu, which means that no water is added for dilution after distillation. This shochu is aged for 5 to 7 years in oak barrels and is particularly mild and complex. Roasting the barley provides a subtle sweetness that harmonises perfectly with the barrel notes.

The Kenjou Shuzo distillery is located in Tachiarai , Fukuoka Prefecture. Fukuoka is the second largest barley producer in Japan after neighboring Saga Prefecture. The barley is particularly aromatic due to the extremely fertile soil and proximity to the active volcanoes on Kyushu.

The raw material for Fukuro Shochu is exclusively roasted barley. Roasted barley in the form of roasted barley koji, but also rice koji are used for the fermentation. This Shochu is produced by vacuum distillation. The long-term storage of 5 to 7 years in oak barrels gives the Fukuro an exciting complexity. Whisky fans will really enjoy this product. Despite the relatively high alcohol content - at least for a Shochu - the Fukuro is very easy to drink. The finish is long with fine umami notes.

The Fukuro Shochu is a real medal catcher. At the Monde Selection International Gold Award, it has regularly received the gold award in succession since 2012. Most recently, it secured the highest gold award, "Superior Gold", at the Tokyo Whisky & Spirits Competition 2021. In 2020, it won gold here.

Fukuru means "owl", which also appears on the bottle label. Owls are one of the top 10 lucky charms in Japan. But owls do not only bring luck and work against difficulties, they are also a sign of wisdom, science and art.

Fukuro can be enjoyed perfectly pure as a digestif, but it also tastes great on the rocks. Due to its exciting aromas, it goes particularly well in food pairings with desserts, but also with dark meat and vegetables. As an ingredient for cocktails, it brings fantastic roasted aromas and barrel notes into the glass and makes for particularly exciting creations.
