"Torys was launched as a whisky series by Suntory shortly after the Second World War with the slogan "Good Taste, Good Value" and was designed as a whisky for beginners. As whisky was an absolute luxury item at the time, "Torys" quickly became very popular as it offered a fine taste at a good price. In 1958, "Uncle Torys" debuted as a brand icon on the bottle. It symbolized the typical office worker who enjoyed a glass of whisky at the end of the day to relax after a hard day's work. Uncle Torys was very popular at a time of rapid economic growth in Japan. In addition to commercials, Uncle Torys can still be found on labels and packaging today.

Suntory is one of the five largest spirits producers in the world and Japan's largest whisky producer with a market share of 70%. The company was founded in 1899 by Shinjiro Torii and is one of the oldest in the distribution of alcoholic beverages. Originally, Suntory was a brewery and distillery, but the business areas were constantly expanded. Today, Suntory produces almost everything, from coffee and soft drinks to fine wines, alcopops, beer, ice cream and flowers. The company is headquartered in Osaka. In April 2014, Suntory bought the spirits giant Beam Inc. for 13.6 billion dollars. Since then, the company has been represented in Germany as Beam Suntory, but changed its name to Suntory Global Spirits in 2024. The Suntory Group includes brands such as Laphroaig, Maker's Mark, Canadian Club, Sauza Tequila and the German winery Robert Weil.
