The Crazy Octopus Chili-Shochu was developed by the Yamaya Distillery in Miyazaki Prefecture in cooperation with the famous Japanese takoyaki chain Gindaco. Takoyaki are octopus balls that are extremely popular in Japan and originated in Osaka. Gindaco is probably their most famous manufacturer. Crazy Octopus Shochu is specially designed for food pairing with takoyaki, but generally goes very well with intense dishes with lots of sauce.

To make Crazy Octopus, classic Honkaku Imo Shochu (sweet potato) is enriched with red chili peppers and macerated. Although the spiciness is at the forefront of the drinking experience, at 25% vol. the Crazy Octopus is still very smooth and pleasant to drink. On ice, with soda or for exciting cocktails, this chili shochu is simply fun in a glass.

The Crazy Octopus won the gold medal at the IWSC 2025 in London. The rating: "Aromas of dried chili peppers, complemented by floral impressions of roses and bright red fruits on the nose. It starts gently on the palate, revealing delicate chili peel and seeds that gradually build to a warming, tingling sensation that lingers pleasantly. Balanced."

About the manufacturer

The Yamaya Distillery is a small distillery in the town of Saito in Miyazaki Prefecture. It was founded in 1956 under the name Masaharu Shuzo. The company has been producing the finest honkaku shochus and liqueurs here ever since. Just 12 employees take care of everything, from production to distribution. In 2022, the distillery changed its name to Yamaya Distillery. The area around the warehouse is blessed with particularly pure and mineral-rich water, which makes their products particularly smooth and mild.
